Amityville is a village in Suffolk County home on the South Shore of Long Island. The village was settled in 1653, by Huntington whom traveled to the area for salt hay. Other names for the village were Huntington West Neck South, West Neck South, and Sweet Hollow. There are several different stories as to how Amityville received its name including one that claimed Samuel Ireland, mill owner, named the town after the name of his boat, Amity. In 1894, the village became incorporated at which time other businesses began to build in the village. Amityville is a family oriented village providing educational opportunities with 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, 2 private schools, and the Island Drafting & Technical Institute. Amityville is very well known for the best selling book which is rumored to be based on the DeFeo murder case, The Amityville Horror. The most popular attractions include The Triangle which is a Memorial in memory of those that served the village and the Lauder Museum offering memorabilia and information on historical facts and activities in the area. The waterfront village is a very sought after area offering families many activities to enjoy including fishing, nature trails, and several parks and beaches.
